I would like to plan a trip from Kenner, Louisiana to Jackson, Hole, Wyoming. I would like to take the most scenic route there and back. I would like to take a different route there and back. Can you help me plan the trip? I will be traveling with two of my children (girl age 17 and 25). We have three weeks and have rented a 4x4 SUV. Thanks.

Looking at the route on a map, I'd suggest a large lollipop route that blazes up through Oklahoma and Kansas via Dallas toward Denver. From there, skirt the Rockies to Fort Collins and Laramie, Wyoming, cruising diagonally across the rolling prairies to Jackson and then north to Yellowstone. The homeward route should take you down the Wyoming-Idaho border and into Utah, from where you'll cut through Salt Lake City and along the state's rugged desert-mountain spine. The goal here is to hit the crown jewels of Zion and Bryce Canyon national parks before continuing your blockbuster tour of the best of the American Southwest by taking in the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. Next, head on south past Flagstaff to Sedona and Phoenix, before cutting east back across the rump of the country through New Mexico and finally Texas on I-10. Lots of driving, lots of logistics, but certainly a trip packed with highlights! My only concern is that this route could be very hot if you're doing it during summer, in which case I might suggest cutting east from Yellowstone to the South Dakota Black Hills and then home from there. For some ideas of things to do on the Southwest leg of the above suggested itinerary, check out this series of blog posts from travel writer Lena Katz, who did a similar route: http://bit.ly/7MMdiB
