I want to take my two small dogs with me on a weekend trip to the Smokeys. What rules and regulations are there to govern bringing pets? Are there any "pet friendly" hotels, motels, restaurants, shopping areas that I should seek out?

Like most National Parks, Great Smoky severely restricts the areas in which dogs are allowed.
The National Park Service website states: "dogs are allowed in campgrounds, picnic areas, and along roads, but must be kept on a leash at all times. The leash must not exceed 6 feet in length. Dogs are only allowed on two short walking paths -- the Gatlinburg Trail and the Oconaluftee River Trail.
In terms of hotels that allow pets, including dogs, there is Great Outdoors Rental in Pigeon Forge, Fireside Chalet, also in Pigeon Forge, and Hidden Springs Resort Rentals in Sevierville.
Restaurants and shopping areas typically don't permit non-working dogs to enter their premises. However, many establishments will allow leashed dogs on their patios, and will often provide water bowls and/or treats.

Dogs are only allowed in the picnic and campground areas, as well as near roads. They must be kept on a leash no longer than six feet at all times and are permitted on only two walking paths -- Oconaluftee River Trail and Gatlinburg Trail. For more information, be sure to check out: Great Smoky Mountains National Park Pets http://bit.ly/cy8zU1

There are pet-friendly hotels in the nearby cities of Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg.
