More ideas for you, Gabby, from another Away.com Big Apple transplant: "Times Square is mostly known for flashy chain eateries, like Bubba Gump Shrimp. For a fun lunch (not a sitdown place) a bit off the beaten path, the Hello Deli at 213 West 53rd Street is a happening place. That's the deli where Rupert Jee works... the deli-shop guy you always see on David Letterman. While you're there, go around the corner to see Letterman's studio and gift shop. Sardi's is also nearby, at 234 West 44th Street, and is a local institution. But you'll pay a premium for this... think $20 cheeseburgers. But things are just pricey in Times Square. For a finer dining experience without all of the Times Square kitsch, head northeast to Columbus Circle, where standouts like Per Se and Blue Ribbon Sushi await."

Hi Gabby, here are some recommendations from an ex-Manhattanite in the Away.com office:
Angus McIndoe: burgers and beer
B.B. King Blues Club & Grill: live music and great food
Shula's: huge portions of steak, but a bit pricey
District: quaint little place, American food that is reasonably priced for the area
