The tourist areas of the Dominican Republic are generally pretty safe. However, the streets are most often dark at night, even in the tourist areas, so it might not be a good idea to walk around alone. If you travel outside of the tourist areas, it would be wise to remove all of your jewelry as muggings happen quite often. It would also be a good idea not to travel alone outside of the tourist areas.
