There are a number of good hotels in Vancouver and the surrounding area, depending on what you want to see and your price range.
If you want to be right downtown, I'd suggest staying at any hotel along Robson Street, Georgia Street, Burrard Street or Yaletown. You can walk anywhere downtown from those locations. English Bay has some great views so you might want to stay down there. Then there are the hotels along the marina close to Stanley Park.
Stay away from any hotel on East Hastings Street - it's skid row.

You can try to either rent an apartment or, better yet, exchange your home for one in Vancouver. Try free Home Exchange and Vacation Rentals website www.ExchangeZones.com
