I'd be surprised if you can't score some great deals from Atlanta to D.C. My mother-in-law flies AirTran all the time from Atlanta to D.C.'s Reagan National (DCA). That puts you on the metro line straight into D.C. (not to mention, gets you here in a fraction of the time when compared to the train). As for hotels, you'll pay more for hotels closer in. Try the hotels in Arlington for less pricey digs. In town, take a look at Capitol Hill Suites, where nightly rates can drop by as much as $150 on Friday-Sunday stays and over seasonal slowdowns. (Check the hotel website for late-breaking weekend specials and holiday packages.) As for cheap activities, D.C.'s the capital of free!
