Daufuskie Island, SC is the "Mackinac Island,Mi" of the south! A lot more low key with fewer tourists and more private resorts but the town is public and very historic if you have ever read Pat Conroys books. This is a getaway place, accessible by boat only. Where Mackinac has plenty to see and do (Really a state park) Daufuskie is very low key, not built up, and mostly privately owned. I have been to both and it is like apples to oranges. Both are worth seeing in their own rights. You may also want to check out Cumberland Island, Ga where wildlife out numbers the humans. Little St Simons Island, Ga which takes only 32 people at a time and is by boat only also.

Go to Michigan...Machana (pronounced mak a naw) Island. Travel by boat to island and ride a bicycle or horses on the island. Absolutely no cars.
Beautiful.

Try visiting Bald Head Island in North Carolina. it's a car-free island and everyone gets around using modified electric golf carts. It was also the primary location for filming for the movie Weekend at Bernie's
