I am going to Paris for 2 weeks and will need a cell phone to call and text back to the States with. My cell phone carrier doesn't offer an international plan and they've recommended that I purchase a pre-paid cell phone at the airport. However, I don't want to pay a fortune and get something that's not going to do what I need it to do. Can anyone suggest a good phone? I'll be calling/txting home twice a day for about 5 mins. at a time-ish. The phone doesn't need tons of bells and whistles ... just enough that if family at home needs to get ahold of me in case of an emergency, they can. Thanks for any help!

While this answer is correct, at Charles de Gualle there are only SFR stores. SFR is a carrier in France and, as most carriers, the rates are high. Example, 0.55 Euros to call within France and 0.75 back to the US and Canada. The best solution is with Mobiho. Their rates are 0.18 to call within France or back to the US or Canada. They are also available before you go at Amazon or at www.cellularabroad.com

You should be fine purchasing a cheapo pay-as-you-go handset so you can control costs, or you can actually rent a phone from someone like AllCell once you arrive at Charles de Gaulle. This might at least give you piece of mind that you're not just buying a piece of junk that you'll just have to ditch after your trip anyway. Most European airports have cell-phone kiosks where you can buy SIM cards as well as prepaid calling cards, another option as you could just use to call from your hotel phone (watch out for hidden hotel charges, though) or a payphone. If you're traveling with a laptop, there's always Skype, too. Bon voyage!
