There are a number of express and slow ferries that sail between Isla Margarita and Puerto La Cruz on the Venezuelan mainland. It's not possible to sail to ports near Caracas at this time. A one-way passenger fare on the island's Conferry line (www.conferry.com) costs a little under $20 in "primera" class for the slow boat; that's $30 for the express, which takes just under two hours. Depending on where you want to be on the mainland, you might want to consider one of the air shuttles to Caracas. Perhaps marginally more expensive, but quicker (a 35-minute flight) and much less hassle. Bear in mind that Puerto La Cruz is about 200 miles east of Caracas.
