I am doing Camp America this summer and when I finish camp I have to get myself from near Millinocket in Maine to New York and I am a bit nervous about travelling alone. What is the best/easiest way to get to New York? Where I will be getting my flight home from. Thankyou.

The Amtrak train runs from Bangor, Maine (72 miles south of Millinocket) to New York City. You would have to get a ride to Bangor. You could also rent a car in Bangor, and drive. FYI, you have to be 21 in most states to rent a car. So, it looks like if you can get to Bangor you've got it made. I worked at a summer camp before I was a teacher and I loved the Camp America people!! Hope you have a great summer. '

That will be a great summer, Charlotte. An amazing part of the States, with some of the country's best outdoor scenery in terms of lakes, mountains, and wildlife. I did a Work America stint one summer in the '90s, too, so know how complex the public transport options can seem when compared to the UK. Luckily, Greyhound has a very extensive network, especially up and down the East Coast. Their services are are typically pretty affordable, albeit very slow. I know Greyhound can have a reputation for being a bit sketchy, but I didn't experience any problems myself except for some bus terminals being a bit rundown and dingy (bear in mind this was over 15 years ago, so am sure things have changed!). Try to plan your travel for during the day and I think you should be just fine. Near Millinocket, Greyhound picks up at Medway, Maine, with a transfer through Bangor to points south including Boston and New York City. Total travel time is about 12 hours. Another option would be to take the bus as far as Bangor and then transfer by bus to Portland, Maine, to join Amtrak's Downeaster service between Portland and NYC (bus transfer included in the price of your ticket). Either way, you're looking at a whole day of travel, so I'd be inclined to recommend you perhaps break up the return journey, perhaps including a leg from Bangor over to Acadia National Park, which is worth checking out if you don't manage to get over there during your Camp America adventure. Hope this helps. Have a great summer! Here's a link to our Baxter State Park guide if you need some outdoorsy tips: http://bit.ly/lF7nDH
