I am coming with 2 teenagers to visit the Smithsonians for 1 1/2 weeks. I need a CHEAP place to stay. The least expensive I have found is $55.00 a night. Are there any cheaper alternatives out there?

The public transportation is pretty good in the D.C. area. Do not limit your hotel search to just D.C.. Many places have shuttles that will take you to the metro, for example, hotels on Rockville Pike in Montgomery County (off the metro red line). If the hotel has no shuttle the "Ride On" (i.e. the public bus) can take you to the metro also.
