How much is it to just pop up a tent each night, and is my dog welcomed there? (Desoto State Park) Also are there any other camp grounds around the the state park that are fairly nice with shower facilities that are at a reasonable rate? I am leaving from Boaz Alabama on my bycicle and my dog. What would be your best suggested route of travel, with camp grounds available on the way to the Little River Canyon National Preserve? Please respond to my questions. For I have limited funds and would like to know the best route that provides camp grounds.

DeSoto offers a primitive campground with 20 sites; $12 per tent. Pets are permitted, so long as they're kept on a leash at all times. Likewise, pets are permitted in Little River Canyon National Preserve. You can camp there but not in the canyon itself; the good news, though, is that camping is free at three designated primitive sites in the Backcountry Area (Slant Rock, Billy's Ford, and Hartline Ford). It doesn't look that far from Boaz to Little River Canyon, so my guess is you can do the ride in a day, spend a night or two in the park, and then head home. Total cost: nada.
