While tsunamis are relatively rare, American Samoa was hit by a tsunami that killed 119 people in the South Pacific in September '09. This part of the Pacific Ocean is quite prone to earthquake activity. Given that it's in the tropics, the area gets hit by tropical storms, too, with the local cyclone season usually lasting from November to April.
