Wow, where to start?! Either side of canyon is spectacular, though obviously the North Rim is that bit more remote and therefore less crowded. (Note that it's closed over winter months, however.) Rim-side lodging includes the Grand Canyon Lodge (North Rim) and El Tovar (South Rim), though both are quite pricey and rooms can be hard to find in peak travel months. There's also a decent campground at Grand Canyon Village. Otherwise, most lodging is outside park boundaries in a somewhat tacky strip of motels, fast-food joints, and gas stations at Tusayan outside park boundaries on the South Rim. As for how long you should spend there, definitely plan on a couple of nights. The Bright Angel Trail to the bottom of the canyon at Phantom Ranch (camping available) is a fantastic overnight trip, or you could try the equally spectacular Kaibab Trail for a lovely day hike. Have fun, and carry plenty of water if you're there in the summer!
