Hi, we are trying to plan our 25th anniv. we only have 7 days max and of course, we're on a budget. We want to do Napa, Sonoma and Hwy 1 from San Fran to Santa Barabara or should we head N on Hwy 1 from San Fran. Really want to make the most of this trip. Help! Any suggestions? Thank you!!!

If you are more into wine country and utter relaxation, I'd say to head north and hit Sonoma and Napa. Make appointments in advance for the volcanic mudbaths (Indian Springs spa in Calistoga is my favorite) and massages, and of course visit the wineries, plus there are biking and hiking trails, small towns, great restaurants, and even a safari: www.safariwest.com. Yeah, a safari in the middle of wine country with giraffes, monkeys, tigers, and other wild animals. Bizarre, but fun!

My wife and I drove the Hwy 1 route from San Fran to Santa Barbara a few years ago and it was certainly a wonderful trip. Stop at Carmel, Big Sur, and San Luis Obispo on your way to Santa Barbara. That said, it might be a little linear for your big event, so I think heading north might offer up some more variety, including all those vineyards. Take a look at this ten-day itinerary (http://away.com/itinerary/united-states/san-francisco-napa-1.html) and perhaps modify to take in the sections you like. Want some surefire romantic hotels? Calistoga Ranch or the Auberge du Soleil, both in Napa. If you do happen to head south, here's a good article on the vineyards in the Santa Barbara area: http://away.com/features/santa_barbara_wine_1.html. Have fun -- and congrats!
