For a great view of the Statue of Liberty without taking the paid tour, jump on the Staten Island Ferry for free! (www.siferry.com). You can great pictures from this view, just bundle up so that you can stand outside. The Empire State Building can get really long lines during the day, but the viewing area is open until 2:00am and is much less crowded at night- the view of all the lights is pretty cool. For another great view, sometimes less crowded during the day, you could try the top of Rockefeller Center (http://www.topoftherocknyc.com/). Plus, for discounted Broadway shows you can purchase them that day at TKTS (www.tdf.org/tkts)

Absolutely, it will be cheaper to stay Off Manhattan, so to speak. You might also try Brooklyn for cheaper digs. And honestly, it's still pretty easy to get into town on the subway and via other overland rail lines. As for cheapish places to stay in the Big Apple, you might look at the Pod Hotel, which we reviewed in a blog at: http://blogs.away.com/travel/2008/06/two-cool-new-yo.html. Not everyone's style, but def. worth a look. You could also try airbnb.com or HomeAway, both of which might feature affordable lodging choices from property owners who are out of town for the holidays. Check out this blog post for more on those two websites: http://blogs.away.com/travel/2009/08/budget-accomodations-the-new-way-to-travel.html.
