You don't say which airport, so it's a little hard to give you any hotel recommendations! That said, no point staying out near the airport when you've only got a night or so to sample the Big Apple! I find that walking around Manhattan is one of the most enjoyable ways to experience the sights, sounds, and people of this vibrant city. A trip on the Staten Island Ferry is a cheapo but fun way to get close to the Statue of the Liberty plus enjoy views of the Lower Manhattan skyline. Head to Central Park for a stroll and to meet some of the street performers and other characters who populate this famous urban space. While up that way, do some window shopping down Fifth Ave., or some real shopping at the Apple Store or F.A.O. Schwartz. A little ways up on the opposite of the park, the Museum of Natural History has some amazing exhibits. I'm also a fan of the Museum of Modern Art ("MoMa") as well as the Guggenheim. Head up the Empire State Building sure, but get an even better glimpse of one of NYC's signature skyscrapers, as well as the expanse of Central Park, from the "Top of the Rock," aka the observation deck at Rockefeller Center. It's a wee bit pricey, but well worth it! And of course, just spend some time taking in the madness at Times Square. So many amazing things to see and do in NYC, much of it free. Enjoy. If you need a hotel recommendation, I stayed at the Staybridge Suites off Times Square with my family and found it to quite affordable in a handy location. Rooms are a little bit cramped, but the hotel is almost brand-new and has decent amenities like free breakfasts. Close to subway, bus, and rail services for airport connections, etc.
