Hello, we are planning out family vacation for June 2011. We'll most likely stay @ Maho for 2 weeks and I am wondering if perhaps we should rent bicycles from Arawak Expeditions/Chocolate Hole for our stay or should we take taxi's to Trunks/town/ Cruz Bay for our outings? We have a 12 year old son and we are flat landers (from the Texas *flat* coast). I am wondering if biked would be affordable AND if we could physically handle the hills?
Thank You
RF

I love cycling and wouldn't want to dissuade anyone from it, but I can't honestly say St. John lends itself to cycling. I think I saw one person doing it the week I was there and he had calves of steel. The hills are steep and there is very little shoulder to avoid cars.
Another option are the jitneys (open-aired buses) that go around the island. They stop at Maho pretty regularly I think.

While renting bikes and taxis are both economical, a taxi might be the better option simply because it's efficient and takes you back to your accommodations after a long day. Riding the bike is an excellent way to take in views as you move between destinations, but remember you'll be travelling those hills back and forth!
