Hello there! I am trying to plan a trip with my fiance this summer. We live in the suburbs of Chicago and are looking for an escape. We love nature and would love to go somewhere special in the Midwest with spectacular views of forests, lakes, caverns, waterfalls, and of course most importantly wildlife! She is an aspiring photographer and I would love this trip to give her the experience and photos to build her portfolio. The main thing that we are worried about is cost. We do not need a fancy hotel, but yet we do not want to sleep on the ground floor or in our car. A crummy hotel with a bed is all we need. What could we look into to fulfill our perfect getaway?

Even though it's been more than a year since this question was posted, I felt the need to chime in for anyone else who may be interested. This past summer, my family spent a week in the Garden of the Gods region in southern IL. Absolutely breathtaking!! We stayed at Golconda Stables--perfect if you're looking for rustic (but not primitive).

Look into the Porcupine Mts in Michigan's upper penisula. Lots of natural wonder, waterfalls etc.

You might cosider the Blue Ridge Parkway if you're into scenery and nature photo oppourtunties and are up for a road trip. It's a two lane road with no commercial traffic, adverising, or business directly on the parkway except for the visitors centers, etc.

Boundary Waters, Boundary Waters! Grand Marais is a good gateway for this untouched area (technically, one of the most acoustically pristine in the Lower 48). Try the Bearskin Lodge for a place to bed down. http://vacation.away.com/hotels/travel-ld-cid335614-grand-marais-hotelid810551-bearskin-lodge-hotel.html
