Hello NC! I am curious, about how far of a drive is the Charlotte area from great hiking and/or the mountains? I am a lover of the outdoors, and am looking for an ideal mix of urban and outdoors. Any suggestions on a city? Is Charlotte a good choice?

The best hiking will require a longish drive west to Asheville and the Smoky Mountains, but Charlotte also has some good outdoors options on its doorstep. Two good local picks include 32,500-acre Lake Norman, 35 miles north of Charlotte on I-77, and Crowders Mountain State Park, 25 miles west on I-87.
