Although many people consider Santa Fe and Taos as desert locales, they're actually at altitudes of around 7,000 feet up in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo mountains. Which means things can get downright chilly in the winter (indeed, they have some highly regarded ski resorts here with some big terrain). So I'm not sure I'd look to NM for your warm-weather break. You're probably best to head toward either Florida (http://vacation.away.com/florida/travel-v1-cid1948-florida-cid1606-beach-vacations.html) or Georgia (http://vacation.away.com/georgia/travel-v1-cid1486-georgia-cid1606-beach-vacations.html) where things are apt to be a little balmier. The other plus of staying on the East Coast is that you'll cut down on flying time and connections (not to mention a longish drive from Albuquerque to Santa Fe), always an advantage when you're flying with a toddler.
