Family beach spot I have promised to take my kids to a beach August 4-9. We will drive from Pittsburgh,PA. I am looking for advice as to something fun and affordable. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. My kids are 10,12 and 14. (at least the ones who still think a beach trip with Dad is fun).

I'm assuming you don't want to be in the car too long, so point the wheel toward the shorelines of New Jersey, Delaware, and Maryland. Atlantic City might be a little gaudy and "adult"-focused, but still has lots of activities for kids, not to mention loads of deals. Further south, both Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach are very family-friendly locales with nice beaches and plenty of activities for kids. Given that you're vying for the title of Cool Dad 2008, though, I'd recommend that you pull out the stops and float on over to Block Island, a ferry ride from New London in Rhode Island. On Block Island, you can learn to kiteboard with Diamondblue Kiteboarding, sea kayak the 700-acre Great Salt Pond, fish, surf, laze on 2.5-mile-long Crescent Beach (a free beach), or rent bikes to explore the island's 15 other miles of beach and publicly accessible shoreline.
