Hi Barb: I'd strongly recommend you pick up a copy of Jamie Jensen's "Road Trip USA" (now in its fifth edition, available on, which outlines a route down the Atlantic coast that'll keep you away from tedious I-95. Lots of fascinating detail and recommendations for little coastal areas including DE's Lewes and Cape Henlopen, VA's Chincoteague Island, and NC's Cape Fear and Outer Banks. Further south, highlights include Savannah and Little St. Simon's Island, both GA, and Amelia Island and St. Augustine in Florida. You don't say where in Florida you want to reach (or how long you have), but an alternative is to leave the coast for the mountains around the D.C. or Richmond area and drive southwest through the Blue Ridge and Smoky Mountains of Virginia and Tennessee. You could stop somewhere like Asheville, North Carolina, before making your way south through Atlanta and Gainesville. Depending on when you're planning to go, this option might be better in spring or fall for the seasonal colors and foliage.
