It'll be a little dicey getting out of the city. I'd stick to the bridges instead of the tunnels due to height restrictions and just general traffic madness. I once drove through the midtown tunnel in a Uhaul...not fun. But once you get to the highways you'll be fine. Take subways while you're in the city to avoid having to park the big rig, and always lock up tight. Once out of the city, you'll only have to worry about mountain roads (Bear Mountain in upstate NY for example, I wouldn't want to drive over that with an RV). Also, while in NY, keep in mind that the Parkways (Saw Mill Parkway, Long Island etc) have height restrictions due to low bridges over the roadways. Good luck with the trip.

Thanks a lot Pieter, will definitely keep this in mind! I've been told that picking up an RV in NYC is a crazy idea due to the city traffic. I've been strongly advised not to do it. What do you think about it? Is it really a bad move? Cheers!

Decide whether you want to see Boston or Philadelphia/DC. Boston will give better fall foliage but will be colder. Philly/DC will be more of an urban trip. For Boston: Drive north from NYC into the Catskills (or the West Point/Bear Mountain Area). Cut over on side roads through western CT/MA/VT until you can hook up with a highway and go to Boston. Spend a few days, then head up to New Hampshire and Vermont before shooting back down 91 to NYC.
