You might want to look at the Elk River Touring Center, Darby, which is in West Virginia, south of Elkins. It's about 220 miles west of D.C.. so not sure if that's too long of a drive. They offer five kilometers of groomed cross-country trails, as well as access to a further 35 kilometers of trails that traverse WV's Highland Scenic Highway (which is not maintained for motorized vehicles during the winter and can get up to three feet of snow). History of this area includes Frontier and Civil War historic sites, as well as attractions like Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. The center offers B&B lodging in inn-style rooms or cabins, or you're close to Snowshoe Mountain Resort for a larger choice of modern accommodations. If you're looking for historic lodging, then both West Virginia's The Greenbrier (http://bit.ly/nfcXJx) and Virginia's The Homestead (http://bit.ly/osIRS7) are within 65-75 miles of Elk River. Hope this helps. Let me know if you need more ideas in the region. Pennsylvania also has some good cross-country options.
