Can drive as far as Thompson. From there either the train or air; Decent hwy conditions. Travelling up Hwy 6 you can camp at Prov Parks:St Ambroise,Lundar Beach,Watchhorn; I'd recommend taking a detour W on 60, N on 10 and check out Clearwater lake (Dolomite Caves)continue N and go E on 39 and experience the Grass River (Karst spring trail),continue E and turn N at 392, just before Wekusko Falls There's a lodge where you can rent a boat,45 min later you could be viewing 1500-3000 yr old pictographs on Tramping Lake. Go S again back to 39; continue E until you meet up with 6 again. Go north ; just before Paint Lake MUST SEE Pisew Falls!(if you can hike Kwasitchewan falls is in there too but it's 22km return).A few min N and you're at Paint Lake, a few more min N and you're in Thompson. You probably want to rest now on a 14h train ride N to Churchill. Nice photos at manitobaphotos.com/northern Manitoba and nice travel diary at crazyguyonabike.com

As far as we know, there are no roads into Churchill, so you have to fly. On Google Maps (maps.google.ca) you can trace a small, dirt forest road from Churchill through the lakes region down to Winnipeg, but it looks pretty sketchy. Let us know if you find otherwise.
