Can I schedule a tour of the White House for my family of 4 in July? If so, how would I find out who our Member of Congress is and how would I get in touch with them to request a White House tour?

You can schedule White House tours through your appropriate Member of Congress, but unfortunately you have to submit your request at least six months in advance. So you're out of luck for July. More info is available at: www.whitehouse.gov/history/tours/. Having done one of these tours (about ten years ago, admittedly), I remember that it was quite cursory and very much like an assembly line. Happily, however, you can still get very close to the U.S. President's pad just by walking around the perimeter -- you may even get to see him fly in or out on the presidential chopper if you're lucky. Another great vantage point is the rooftoop patio in the nearby Hotel Washington. Also, plan on visiting the White House (not to mention, nearby National Mall and its monuments) at nighttime when things are quieter and the buildings are illuminated. It is very easy to walk between the main sights in this part of town (also a great way to get a feel for the city).
