No - it is a five to seven hour busride from Kathmandu. Better to go at least over night. Take an elephant ride the evening you get there - there are plenty of lodges next to the park. Then the next morning take the longer jeep ride, which if you take it early enough, you MIGHT see a tiger - very rare, but possible. On both you should see one-horned white Asian rhinos.

You can book a hotel in Kathmandu or in Chitwan - and book the tours in Chitwan. Any other questions you can contact me through my website - www.altavistatrek.com - I'm an American living in Kathmandu, running a trekking company with my Nepalese partners.

Not sure where you're looking to arrive from, but Royal Chitwan National Park is quite a long journey from the Nepalese capital, Kathmandu, for just a day. If you do want to go, there are lots of lodges and hotels in and around the park (most of them situated near the village of Sauraha). Many of these places will include elephant rides and guided jungle walks as part of a standard package; you can also make arrangements with local guides as well as organize tours through the ticket office at the entrance to the park. Prime wildlife to spot includes rhinos (more common) and tigers (very rare). Accommodations run the gamut from the luxe Chitwan Jungle Lodge inside the park to comfortable but less well-appointed places like Jungle Tourist Camp near Sauraha. Word of warning: when I visited Chitwan, I found the elephant ride to be the most depressing part of the whole experience. While the animals weren't mistreated, I never quite got used to seeing our mahout whack the poor thing on its calloused head with what was basically an iron crowbar.
