Stockbridge Bowl (also called Lake Mahkeenac) is adjacent to the Tanglewood venue and makes for an idyllic place to paddle and languish on a warm summer's evening as the BSO's melodies wash over you (besides, who doesn't want a world-class concert for free?). If you don't have your own gear, you can rent single and tandem kayaks from the Arcadian Shop in nearby Lenox, MA (they provide straps and foam for car-top transportation). For something a little more raucous, the Class II-IV Deerfield River offers some stern (and fun) whitewater. The put-in is near Charlemount, MA, just 40 miles northeast of Tanglewood. Check out this page on Away.com's sister site, GORPtravel, for river info and outfitter listings: http://gorptravel.away.com/rafting-guide/massachusetts/deerfield-river.html
