Closest beach is probably Bowers Beach, though this is technically facing the Delaware Bay. If you have wheels, you should head down to the chain of great little beach towns about 50 miles southeast of Dover. These are Lewes, Rehoboth, and Dewey Beach. Each has its own charms, with Rehoboth being more of the happening beach hub with lots of bars and restaurants, while Dewey is slightly quieter with more of a family vibe. Claws Crabhouse in Rehoboth is a good spot for a beer and a nosh. Lewes is home to the great Dogfish Head brewery and brewpub. Worth a stop, as is nearby Cape Henlopen State Park, with a lovely unspoiled Atlantic-facing beach as well as nearby campground if you want to sleep under the stars. All the beaches here clean and quiet wide, although they do get busy in season.
