Go to Point Pleasant.NJ Transit[nj coastline r/r] to Newark. Change trains for DC [AmTrack]or You can go upstairs and take the PATH train [change in Jersey City] and right into NYC. There you can get the subway or grab a cab,a bus or walk. OOORRRR-------TAKE the NJ Transit bus or Academy bus FROM TOMS RIVER into NYC.

Assuming you can get to Philly or Trenton pretty easily, train or bus should be your best bet. Lots of cheap bus lines running this corridor. Try BusJunction.com for a range of fares and consumer reviews of the different bus companies.
