Tim, that should be a good day trip! I'm not sure how active the members of your group are, but there are lots of excellent hiking trails in the area that take you along the rugged coastline to hidden coves and beaches, as well as through huge stands of towering redwood trees. One of my favorite places to hike is Pescadero Marsh, which lies on the Pacific flyway and is great for winter birding. The tidal pools at Fitzgerald Marine Reserve are pretty cool, too -- look out for starfish, sea anemones, and harbor seals. Talking of seals, Ano Nuevo State Reserve (27 miles south of Half Moon Bay) is home to a colony of elephant seals that is particularly raucous in winter as the males try to impress prospective female mates! January is also an ideal time for a whale-watching tour out of Half Moon Bay to see the California gray whales frolicking offshore. For something a little more sedate, don't miss the Pigeon Point Lighthouse in Pescadero, one of the area's most recognizable landmarks. After a full day's activity, definitely stop for dinner and/or a drink on the outdoor patio of Moss Beach Distillery, a locals' favorite that's won lots of area dining awards.
