What to do in Ambergris Caye

With Houston, Miami, and New Orleans just over 2.5 hours away, Ambergris Caye can feel more like the United States than Central America—if the States were blessed with Belize’s coral-rimmed tropical serenity. Ambergris is the largest of the country’s islands (or “cayes”), and it shows, with legions of resorts, hotels, and crowded beaches. But the island also stands as the main launch pad to remote islands like Half Moon Caye, the second-largest coral reef in the world, and the UNESCO-listed Blue Hole, a collapsed cave system that every diver must explore. All-inclusives are the game here—typically with a menu of day-long activities on offer, from snorkeling and diving to fishing and adventures on the rainforest-choked mainland. Thankfully, the island infrastructure also affords the indie-minded traveler lots of options as well.
