Algonquin Provincial Park Nature Travel Tips

  • Cruise the highway to spot wildlife, especially at dawn or just before sunset. Concentrate on low-lying wet areas such as bogs, ponds, and beaver meadows.
  • Don't miss the public wolf howls to hear Algonquin's canine denizens crying into the night air.
  • The Beaver Pond Trail, the Spruce Bog Boardwalk, and the Mizzy Lake Trail, which was specifically designed for wildlife viewing, all meander around wide-open, easily viewed wetland habitat—the preferred habitat of many wildlife species.
  • Moose sightings in May and June right along Highway 60 are pretty much a sure thing. It's important to note that each year about 30 moose are killed in vehicle collisions; be vigilant, particularly at night, and never exceed the speed limit.
  • Keep an eye out for beavers working on their dams in October. Try the Beaver Pond Trail and the Mizzy Lake Trail. Come summer, you won't see them out until close to sunset.
