What to do in Anchorage

The municipality of Anchorage is nearly the size of Delaware, and it encompasses the country’s third-largest state park, Chugach, within its borders. So of course it’s perennially heralded for outdoor adventures, from 200-plus miles of trails to urban salmon fishing in Ship Creek. More than 1,600 moose reportedly live within the city limits. But Anchorage’s frontier spirit belies a little-known fact: Its urban core is surprisingly cosmopolitan. G Street is home to art galleries and restaurants like Simon & Seafort’s, which serves wild Alaska salmon and crab in inventive ways. The Oomingmak Musk Ox Producers’ Co-operative sells hats knitted by Native Alaskan women from remote villages. And don’t miss the Alaska Museum, commemorating a top local pastime: flying. Anchorage is home to more pilots per capita than any other American city.
